A column kit gives a builder every part of a column in one order. Decorative Architectural Products supplies foam architectural column kits for porches, gates, patios and interiors, with the shaft, capital and base made as a matching set.
What is in a column kit
A typical kit has a shaft, a capital, a base and, if needed, a plinth. The shaft can be round or square, straight or tapered, smooth or fluted, and the capital follows a Tuscan, Doric, Ionic or modern profile. Parts are numbered and made to fit each other, so the kit goes together on site without trimming. Split shafts wrap an existing post, and full-height kits cover a new structural column. Decorative columns for interiors use the same logic at a smaller scale.
Sizing a kit
Give us the finished height, the shaft diameter or width and the style, and we draw the proportions. As a general rule, the capital and base should be in scale with the shaft, and a taller column needs a stronger taper and a larger plinth to look balanced. Kits for 6x6, 8x8 and 12x12 posts are common, and larger custom sizes are made in sections that join on site.
Foam kits compared with other materials
Wood columns can rot at the base, fiberglass and cast stone are heavy, and PVC wraps can look thin. Our kit parts are CNC-cut from high-density EPS and covered with a polyurea hard coat, so they are light enough for two people to install and resist moisture and UV outdoors. Finishes include paint, stucco, stone and plaster looks. Your builder remains responsible for the structural support behind the kit.
