Preguntas frecuentes
- Is it possible to use your portals for wood-burning fireplaces?
Yes. We apply non-combustible GFRC or cast stone for the area around the firebox to handle high temperatures and meet fire safety regulations. These materials also perform excellently in surrounds for electric fireplaces and for those with gas inserts.
- How much do your fireplace surrounds weigh?
Our GFRC high-temperature elements weigh roughly 5-10 times less than solid natural stone of comparable volume. This allows them to be mounted on standard walls with anchors.
- Can you make a surround based on my photo?
Absolutely. We specialize in custom home fireplace surrounds. Send us your inspiration photos or sketches, and we will develop a 3D model and then manufacture the relevant mold.
- Does the surface require special maintenance?
No, our products are treated with a protective sealer that resists soot, dust, and moisture. Regular wet cleaning is adequate.
- How long does it take to manufacture your fireplace surrounds?
The process usually takes 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design and the workload of our craftsmen. This is much faster than manufacturing stone fireplaces, which require stone to be ordered from a quarry.
- Can your surround be installed over existing tiles?
Yes, our solutions are ideal for renovations. Tile surrounds for fireplaces can be covered with our overlay elements.
- Do you make floating shelves?
Yes, this is a popular request from our customers. We make these shelves hollow inside, which reduces their weight and allows us to use hidden fasteners for a floating effect.
- Are your products suitable for outdoor fireplaces?
Yes. All of our fireplace surround elements hold up great outdoors. Both the GFRC high-temperature zone and our EPS coatings are moisture, UV, and temperature-differential resistant.
- How do you ship?
We ship our products throughout the United States in sturdy packaging. This ensures the integrity of the shipment.
- Do you provide samples?
Yes, we can send you samples of colors and textures (e.g., limestone or travertine) so you can “try them on” for your interior.

Custom Fireplace Surround Kits
A skillfully decorated fireplace always adds a touch of magic to the interior. And it doesn’t matter whether the decorations conceal an electric or a real hearth – this element becomes the focal point of the coziest room in the building. Architectural fireplaces decorated with hand-carved marble or intricate plaster moldings look especially luxurious.
What if we told you that you could create such beauty in your home in a matter of days instead of weeks, at a much lower cost, and without compromising on quality? This is exactly what Decorative Architectural Products offers. In our custom fireplace production, we combine knowledge of classic designs, the unique properties of polyurethane foam, and modern processing technologies.

Why polyurethane foam transforms fireplace design
Having an architectural fireplace in the living room is an unspoken sign of an “aristocratic” interior. And when it comes to premium quality, the materials must be chosen accordingly. Natural stone or decorative plaster fireplace surrounds immediately come to mind. But they have their limitations, both in terms of manufacturing and installation. Let’s consider the practical realities. A simple stone fireplace with a frame overall width of 28-48”, and a relatively shallow depth can weigh over 500 pounds. Such weight requires a structural assessment, reinforcement, specialized crews, and several days of installation. A structure with similar decor but made of high-density polyurethane foam is 90% lighter and weighs about 50 pounds. This option can be installed in a few hours using standard adhesive. The labor savings alone are often enough to justify the choice, not to mention the expanded design possibilities.
Polyurethane foam is becoming an excellent solution for modern architectural practice. The material combines the aesthetic flexibility of plaster with structural advantages that natural materials cannot match:
- Zero moisture absorption due to its closed-cell structure. This means that the polyurethane will not crumble or crack, which is unavoidable when using natural stone.
- Uniform density ensures no weak points or structural variations common in quarried stone
- Flexibility under load prevents catastrophic cracks from building settlement.
- Temperature stability makes custom outdoor fireplaces reliable from Minnesota winters to Arizona summers.
Finally, custom polyurethane fireplaces are quite environmentally friendly. Compare yourself. Quarrying stone produces 50-70% waste; transporting it over long distances consumes significant amounts of fuel. Polyurethane molding creates minimal waste, and production waste is recyclable. Their light weight significantly reduces energy costs for transportation: one truck can transport the same amount of stone as 5-8 loads.

Design versatility across every architectural style
Another important advantage of polyurethane foam is that it enables design complexity impossible with traditional materials. Deep undercuts, open negative spaces, layered relief: in stone, a pattern like this usually has to be pieced together from several blocks, and every joint shows. In foam, it comes out of the mold as one piece. Designers get to draw what they actually want, not what the quarry can deliver. Custom fireplaces no longer require compromises in the choice of materials, depending on the era or aesthetic direction.
Classical and historical authenticity
For restoration architects needing a custom antique fireplace surround that honors historical integrity, foam technology provides archaeological-level precision. Imitation columns on the sides, a fluted fireplace surround with classical pilasters, capitals with acanthus leaves, egg-and-dart moldings, Greek key patterns, and Renaissance cartouches are reproduced with millimeter precision based on the documentation or the customer’s references. Hand finishing applies patinas and aging effects indistinguishable from centuries-old plasterwork. Even Victorian designs with floral brackets, multi-tiered mantel shelves, and elaborate mantelpieces become cost-effective for residential projects. Details pushing traditional installations into five figures remain affordable at a fraction of their historical cost.

Contemporary and modern applications
Creating a minimalist polyurethane fireplace is even easier than a richly decorated one. Clean-lined surrounds, a picture frame fireplace with a slim flat border, floating mantels with hidden mounting, and geometric abstractions benefit from foam’s crisp edges and perfect planes. The material is suitable for any finish, from smooth matte to glossy lacquer, whether you want white fireplace surrounds or a custom color. For biophilic design, foam allows you to create forms inspired by nature: smooth asymmetry, organic motifs, and geological effects. All these elements would be prohibitively expensive if carved from stone.
Fireplace surrounds in Mediterranean and rustic characters
The style of a country house or coastal cottage – our fireplaces are best suited for such applications. Thanks to special finishes, it is possible to create stunningly realistic imitations of weathered limestone, travertine, and rough-hewn stone, giving the surround the look of a natural limestone fireplace. At the same time, the result weighs significantly less than stone items, opening up new possibilities where load-bearing restrictions prevent the use of traditional designs.
But stone is not the only option. Polyurethane custom products even allow for experiments with wood simulation, which cannot be achieved with natural wood due to fire safety concerns. For example, faux wood can be used not only for the mantelpiece above the fireplace but also for the side framing. Since fireplace mantels and surrounds are often ordered together, you can match the shelf to your kit with our faux wood mantels.

Precision + craft: that’s how we work on custom fireplaces
We treat the manufacture of each custom-made architectural fireplace as a work of art. And these are not just words. At Decorative Architectural Products, custom architectural foam and decorative elements are our specialty, and with nearly 25 years in architectural fabrication, we have consistently excelled in producing such items. We have worked on a wide variety of residential and commercial projects, including cozy living rooms, impressive hotel lobbies, and restaurant halls.
One example is a custom fireplace surround for a luxury residence in Jacksonville, Florida: a large, floor-to-ceiling classical design that combines precast concrete around the firebox with lightweight foam components above the mantel to reduce the load on the floor structure. Thanks to our extensive experience, we have a keen understanding of the specifics of different interiors and can quickly grasp any client’s needs. And just for you, we will lift the veil on our work process.
Digital-to-physical workflow
Every custom home fireplace surround begins with a preliminary consultation. Our specialists will not only take measurements but also advise you on the optimal design for your space. To prepare, note the width and height of the firebox opening, the overall wall width and ceiling height, the height of a raised fireplace hearth if you have one, and the fuel type (gas, electric, or wood-burning). Final fireplace surround dimensions and mantel height are then set with the required clearances, following the fireplace manufacturer’s instructions and local building codes.
The customization depth goes beyond dimensions and style. If desired, you can include non-standard elements in your order, such as:
- Built-in LED channels for accent illumination;
- Recessed panels for tile insets, if you prefer a fireplace with a tile surround inside a sculpted frame, decorative ironwork, or client-provided artwork;
- Modified depth to accommodate specific firebox models or multimedia equipment;
- Split sections for complex access routes or future dismantling needs.
- Electrical chases for wall-mounted televisions or media components.
Next comes 3D modeling. We turn your measurements and sketches into a CAD model and show it to you as photorealistic renders placed in your actual room, so you know exactly what you’re approving before anything is made. Moving a molding on screen is a lot easier than recutting a mold. The approved file then goes to the CNC machine that cuts the molds, with tolerances of 0.5 mm. Two-component polyurethane is poured into the mold under high pressure, so it picks up even the finest detail, and it sets in a matter of minutes.

Superior hand finishing
This is where the machines step aside. Everything after casting is done by hand: our finishers build up texture, color, and patina layer by layer until the piece stops looking like foam and starts looking like carved stone or old plaster. First, a base coat seals the foam so the next layers have something to grip. What happens after that depends on the look you’re after:
- Venetian plaster in several thin, tinted and waxed layers for a limestone or marble look;
- Dry-brushing and antiquing glazes that settle into the recesses, the way dust and soot do over a century;
- Genuine gold, silver, or copper for period gilding;
- Color matched to your existing trim, stonework, or interior palette.
The last step is a clear commercial-grade polyurethane sealant. It locks in the sheen level you chose and protects the surface from dust and everyday knocks.
Quality under control
Before anything ships, every component is measured against the approved drawings, its finish is inspected, and it goes through a final pre-installation check. For large installations, such as hotel lobbies, restaurant features, or residential great rooms, kit components arrive numbered and sequenced with detailed installation drawings.
